The story of Young Lion is the story of good friends and great beer. What started out as an idea tossed around a bar in Rochester became a dream we couldn’t shake. So we took our tight knit crew of doers and craft beer lovers and turned that dream into Young Lion Brewing Co. If you’re ever in Canandaigua Lake, pull up a stool and order a pint. Because at the edge of the lake there may be no more water, but there’s always more beer.

ABV 6.5% · IBU's 57 · SRM 5.5
A true to style IPA, this is a hoppy beer with a smooth finish and is a good representation of our approach to the classic beers. There is a reason why it was our first beer off the line.
ABV 8.8% · IBU's 88 · SRM 7
Yep, you might get a hint of papaya in our Double India Pale Ale, but its not too sweet and the bitterness is nicely balanced.
ABV 5.2% · IBU's 35 · SRM 6.6
A crisp and refreshing Czech style pilsner, our take on this style is fuller bodied with slightly higher IBUs than you get in a traditional American Pilsner.
Young Lion's brewery is located at the north end of Canandaigua Lake in upstate New York.
Once you enter the brewery you’ll smell the specialty malt coming from the mill room, you’ll notice our 3 vessel, 35 barrel brew house amongst a forest of 90 barrel fermenters and you’ll watch our Westfalia centrifuge create magic.
Meet the people behind Young Lion
With more than a decade of experience in the beverage industry, Platz comes to Young Lion from TrimTab Brewing, where he worked for 1 and a half years. Prior to TrimTab, Phil worked at MillerCoors for over 9 years, brewing and taste-testing some of America’s best known beer brands.
Missing the craft, Phil left Miller to be the Head Brewer at Trim Tab Brewery (Alabama) where he could get back to his love of the art. In his role at Young Lion, Platz is the mastermind behind the beer, overseeing all brewing operations from start to finish. From delicious IPAs to classic and crisp Pilsners, Phil is responsible for all of Young Lion’s original craft brews. After Phil finished his undergrad at West Chester University of Pennsylvania he attended University of California Davis and completed the Master Brewer’s Program in 2005.
With a longstanding passion for craft beers and the craft brewing industry, Newman tried her hand at homebrewing, but quickly realized her taste for the craft didn’t translate into tasty beers. So, at YLBC, Jen leaves the brewing to the masters, but takes the lead from the trenches as head business maven.
Jen joined the Young Lion project in August 2015. In her role as Founder, Newman assumes all operational responsibilities including strategic planning, vendor relations, HR, budgeting, licensing, , strategy, sales – and of course, beer tasting.
Before fulfilling her dream to launch a brewery, Newman worked for more than 20 years in business Initially as a business analyst (Price Waterhouse LLP, Scholastic, Cox Communications, and LiDestri Foods) before co-founding three successful start-ups: DbSecure, Application Security and Techrigy.
William (Bill) Miller is the Assistant Brewer at Young Lion Brewing Company. A certified Master Brewer by the World Brewing Academy in Germany, Miller also studied beermaking at that little school in Chicago (Siebel). Both figuratively and literally, Bill’s glass is always half full, so good luck hanging out with this guy and not walking away with a smile on your face.
David Diehl is the Taproom Manager at Young Lion Brewing. He joins us from the famous beer/sports bar 200 Fifth in Brooklyn, NY which he managed for more than 10 years.
With a degree from Hobart & William Smith Colleges, David is excited to be back in the Finger Lakes Region and bring his expertise in hospitality and management to our brand-new tap room. To top it off, his down to earth vibe and enthusiasm for beer and culture will have you beaming from first sip to closing time.
Tim Nervina joined the Young Lion Brewing team as Sales Manager in September of 2017. With 8 years of beverage sales experience- first with Manhattan Beer Distributor and then with the supplier, SweetWater Brewery. When it comes to beer, let’s just say he knows his stuff… As a Finger Lakes native, born in Auburn, he has spent the past decade in NYC after graduating from Iona College with a BBA in Marketing. He brings an energetic wit and savvy attitude towards the everyday ins and outs of the craft beer industry.
Alicia Wolk, a Rochester native, is not only one of the founders for YLBC, but is also the branding brains behind the business, bringing the concept from ideation to ready-to-pour.
Her experience spans from behind the bar, to the board room, with a passion for marketing and hospitality to match. With a keen eye for aesthetics and form, she’s brought the brewery to life and will continue to help grow the brand for years to come.

We “pride” ourselves in serving other brewery’s beer because we are proud of our community. So if you want to talk beer, come in. If you want to watch the game, come in. If you just want to stare at the lake, come in.
