The story of Young Lion is the story of good friends and great beer. What started out as an idea tossed around a bar in Rochester became a dream we couldn’t shake. At Young Lion Brewing our dedicated team takes PRIDE – in being an award winning, woman owned and managed, community focused brewery on the North shore of Canandaigua Lake. If you’re ever in Canandaigua, pull up a stool and order a pint. Because at the edge of the lake there may be no more water, but there’s always more beer. Crafted and canned in the Finger Lakes.

ABV 6.5% · IBU's 57 · SRM 5.5
A true to style IPA, this is a hoppy beer with a smooth finish and is a good representation of our approach to the classic beers. There is a reason why it was our first beer off the line.
ABV 8.1% · IBU's 88 · SRM 7
Yep, you might get a hint of papaya in our Double India Pale Ale, but its not too sweet and the bitterness is nicely balanced.
ABV 5.2% · IBU's 35 · SRM 6.6
A crisp and refreshing Czech style pilsner, our take on this style is fuller bodied with slightly higher IBUs than you get in a traditional American Pilsner.
Young Lion's brewery is located at the north end of Canandaigua Lake in upstate New York.
Once you enter the brewery you’ll smell the specialty malt coming from the mill room, you’ll notice our 3 vessel, 35 barrel brew house amongst a forest of 90 barrel fermenters and you’ll watch our Westfalia centrifuge create magic.
Meet the people behind Young Lion
Phil comes to Young Lion with more than a decade of experience in the beverage industry. A graduate of West Chester University of Pennsylvania he attended University of California Davis and completed the Master Brewer’s Program in 2005. After graduating he was immediately recruited by MillerCoors, where he worked for over 9 years, brewing and taste-testing some of America’s best known beer brands.
Missing the craft, Phil left Miller to spend a year as the Head Brewer at Trim Tab Brewery (Alabama) where he could get back to his love of the art.
In his role at Young Lion, Platz is the mastermind behind the beer, overseeing all brewing operations from grain to “can”. From delicious IPAs to classic and crisp Pilsners, Phil is responsible for all of Young Lion’s original craft brews.
With a longstanding passion for craft beers and the craft brewing industry, Newman tried her hand at homebrewing, but quickly realized her taste for the craft didn’t translate into tasty beers. So, at YLBC, Jen leaves the brewing to the masters, but takes the lead from the trenches as head business maven.
Jen joined the Young Lion project in August 2015. In her role as Founder, Newman assumes all operational responsibilities including strategic planning, vendor relations, HR, budgeting, licensing, strategy, sales – and of course, beer tasting.
Before fulfilling her dream to launch a brewery, Newman worked for more than 20 years in business Initially as a business analyst (Price Waterhouse LLP, Scholastic, Cox Communications, and LiDestri Foods) before co-founding three successful start-ups: DbSecure, Application Security and Techrigy.
Alicia Wolk, a Rochester native, is not only one of the founders for YLBC, but is also the branding brains behind the business, bringing the concept from ideation to ready-to-pour.
Her experience spans from behind the bar, to the board room, with a passion for marketing and hospitality to match. With a keen eye for aesthetics and form, she’s brought the brewery to life and will continue to help grow the brand for years to come.
This kid has got it! Not a moment goes by while Brian is working that you cannot recognize his natural gift for this industry. A Niagara University graduate in Hotel and Restaurant Management, Brian cemented himself in the field he was meant for. Beginning with Finger Lakes wineries and Buffalo breweries, he’s dedicated himself to the art of brewing and is now an Assistant Brewer at YLBC. Chances are, the beer you’re drinking in the tap room…Brian has something to do with it.
Event Sales & Marketing Manager
A Rochester native now living in the Finger Lakes, with nearly 15 years of experience in the Food & Beverage Industry. Over the years Tanya’s developed her skill set in event sales, catering/event management and restaurant marketing. Her experience ranges from running the floor as front of house manger, to coordinating small dinner parties and happy hours, to large corporate functions and weddings.
Couple this experience with her education in Graphic Design and Photography, Tanya has a unique perspective on marketing for the food & beverage industry and the importance of building a brand through engaging imagery.
Born and raised in Rochester, NY – Geremy, once an accounting major, had an opportunity to try his shot at the craft beer industry and has not looked back since. Geremy has nearly 4 years’ experience in the craft beverage sales and an immense ambition for craft beer. Geremy has joined the team as a Sales Representative and is eager to help get Young Lion products to market.
Tap Room Manager
A Canandaigua native with nearly 10 years of hospitality and service industry experience, this guy has seen it all. Starting out bar backing at busy local establishment’s fresh out of high school, then moving up to bartending at dozens of weddings over the last 4 years. Cody has been at Young Lion for the last 2 years in a multifaceted capacity including on the production team shadowing our brewers, working in the tap room, private events in the loft and offsite samplings. Chances are if you have a question about YLBC, he has the answer! Always eager for a new challenge, Cody has landed his role as Tap Room Manager, where he can help lead our tap room staff to new heights. “So lets raise a glass and always drink local”.

Gift & Donation Requests
Young Lion Brewing is proud to be part of the Finger Lakes region and to serve our community in New York State through commerce, volunteerism, events, and activities. As we approach our one-year anniversary we have been receiving an increasing volume of requests for donations. We have set up the following form for people or groups to request donations of any kind (beer, gift cards, merchandise, etc.). As a small business, we are unable to fulfill all requests submitted but they all will be considered. As a guideline, we have established the following requirements which must be met for consideration.
• The group, organization, or event must be in New York State. Preference will be given to those businesses inside the Finger Lakes / Rochester NY Region.
• We welcome requests from any group or organization, however, preference will be given to 501(c) organizations. • All requests must be made at least two months prior to the event. Any request submitted closer to the event will be considered but may be declined.
• Applicants are permitted to request donations once per 12-month period. Multiple donation requests will be considered but may be declined.
• All donations must be picked up at Young Lion Brewing, 24 Lakeshore Drive, Canandaigua, NY 14424 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. so that appropriate manager can be informed and handle the donation.
• Any donations which include a keg will require a $75 keg deposit. Any donation which involves a hand tap will require a $25 tap deposit. These deposits are 100% non-negotiable. Deposits can be in the form of cash or credit card and will be returned in full upon the safe return of the keg and/or tap.
• We reserve the right to deny any donation request, and a successful donation request one year does not guarantee the same success year after year.
Once your application has been submitted it will be reviewed by the Donation Committee and we will do our best to respond in a timely manner.
